Assuming, just for the sake of argument, that "Obama had Trump Tower wiretapped," as Trump is now alleging, why would he disclose that on Twitter? If there were any truth to the allegation whatsoever, he would be jeopardizing an active investigation by publicly talking about it. Now his aides are claiming that Trump's allegation is based upon "classified information." So apparently he is divulging classified information on Twitter. Hilary Clinton's opponents were arguing that she should be prosecuted simply because she used a private email server and classified information "could have" been discovered by hackers. Those same people will most likely do nothing about Trump's crimes. What a double standard.

Classified information should not be released, so in this case what is the classified information that Trump released? From what you wrote, the allegation was "based upon classified information," but the nature of that classified information was not released.

Kellyanne Conway said that Trump was privy to the so-called wiretapping because of classified information that he was provided. If true, the very existence of the wiretapping would be classified.

Are you saying if there was wire tapping it would be classified information, but if there was no wire tapping it would not be classified information?

No, I'm saying Trump's people are saying that the reason that there is not a shred of evidence of wiretapping, that has become public information, is because it is classified. They are saying there is evidence, but it is classified.

I don't believe that, but if it was classified, why is Trump talking about it on Twitter?

There has been a public request for an investigation, so if there is an ongoing investigation, that investigation itself wouldn't be classified, only the findings of the investigation. Apparently Trump has been made aware of the evidence, but as I understand it,he has not made that classified evidence known.

The President is the ultimate "declassifyer". If the information exists and is classified, he can declassify it. However, if it doesn't exist, he can tweet and talk up a storm and the low-information voters making up his base, lap it up.

I think this article states the likely process of what happened pretty well and most certainly does indicate that surveillance activities were going on:
